Rhea A. White’s Experimental Studies

Carlos S. Alvarado, Ph.D.

Parapsychology Foundation

During the 1950s Rhea conducted and participated in several experimental studies that took place at J. B. Rhine’s Parapsychology Laboratory at Duke University (now continued in the Rhine Research Center.) Her first published experiment, entitled “A Report on a Sentence Completion Form of Sheep-Goat Attitude Scale,” was conducted with Robert Van de Castle (Van de Castle & White, 1955).

Rhea later worked with Margaret Anderson in studies in which they explored the effect of attitudes on teachers and students on ESP test scores. In some studies they found higher ESP scores when there was a good rapport between teacher and pupil, but the opposite when the relationship was negative (Anderson & White, 1956, 1957). In later years Rhea conducted other studies with Jean Angstadt in which students were also the subjects (e.g., White & Angstadt, 1963).

Rhea also authored two interesting papers presented at conventions of the Parapsychological Association. One focused on judging in ESP free-response tests (White, 1966), and the other dealt with aspects of dream content in the Maimonides ESP dream experiments (White, Krippner, Ullman & Honorton, 1968).
