About Utrecht II

It has been fifty-five years since Parapsychology Foundation sponsored the groundbreaking “First International Conference of Parapsychological Studies” held in Utrecht, the Netherlands in 1953.

With the generosity of the Dutch non-profit foundation, Het Johan Borgman Fonds (HJBF), Parapsychology Foundation (PF) and its co-sponsor were proud to support the conference, “Utrecht ll: Charting the Future of Parapsychology.” Held in Utrecht in October of 2008, the conference took place in two venues of historical significance, including the University of Utrecht’s Senatezaal, the room in which the original Utrecht l conference was held.

The conference was not open to the public. A select list of Observers (audience members) were invited to participate in the four conference sessions that were envisioned as well as attend the five invited addresses.

In keeping with the spirit and history of Utrecht I, Utrecht II formed a Conference Board consisting of Wim Kramer representing the Het Johan Borgman Fonds of Utrecht and Eileen and Lisette Coly, President and Executive Director of Parapsychology Foundation. A Conference Bureau consisting of Drs. Carlos S. Alvarado and Nancy L. Zingrone was charged with conference detailing and communications. The Conference Board and Bureau, and the Moderator, Dr. Chris Roe, joined with the Advisory Committee to conceptualize the conference. The members of the Advisory Committee are Eberhard Bauer (Institut für Grenzgebiete der Psychologie und Psychohygiene), Dr. Etzel Cardeña (Lund University), Dr. Hans Gerding (Parapsychologisch Instituut), Gerd Hövelmann (Hövelmann Communications), and Dr. Roger Nelson (The Global Consciousness Project).

Observers hailed from a variety of countries, among them Austria, Brazil, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Sweden and the United States. They ranged from gifted post-graduate students to individuals who are at the top of the field. Affiliations included universities, independent laboratories, research societies and foundations. Among the planners, presenters and observers, there are medical doctors, psychologists, historians, physicists, and educators. And happily, Dr. William G. Roll (University of West Georgia) and Dr. Donald J. West (Cambridge University), “veterans” of the first Utrecht conference held in 1953, were also in attendance.
